Nespresso joins a global community of purpose-led businesses that meet the highest standards of sustainability and social responsibility

Nespresso, the pioneer and reference-point of high-quality portioned coffee, has today announced its global certification as a B Corp. The Swiss-based brand joins an international movement of 4,500 purpose-led businesses that meet B Corp’s high standards of social and environmental responsibility and transparency – including Patagonia and The Body Shop.

The announcement is a marker for the positive impact Nespresso has made in the coffee industry and beyond since the brand was founded in 1986. Key contributing elements include its unique approach to coffee sourcing – through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, designed in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance – its strategic alliance with Fairtrade, and the brand’s global recycling scheme for its aluminium capsules.

Guillaume Le Cunff, Nespresso CEO, said: : “B Corp certification reflects a 30-year Nespresso commitment to sustainability, transparency and responsible business. We are immensely proud to be joining a community of like minds who share our belief that profit and purpose go hand-in-hand. This certification brings added value for our customers and affirms to Nespresso fans that their favourite coffee brand is doing business the right way.”

Jonathan Normand, B Lab Switzerland Founder, said: , a déclaré : “The B Corp process is a rigorous and independent assessment of a company’s impact on people and planet, looking at everything from its carbon footprint to the way it treats employees. To achieve B Corp certification is a major milestone for Nespresso. I want to offer my congratulations and wish them well as they continue in their sustainability journey.”

Nespresso will add the B Corp logo to Nespresso products and communications to help spread the word about the movement, educate consumers, and help them make more sustainable choices in their purchasing decisions.

Zèta x Nespresso: a step forward for circularity with sneakers made using recycled coffee grounds

Nespresso, the pioneer and reference-point of high-quality portioned coffee, has partnered with zero-waste fashion start-up Zèta to create RE:GROUND, a stylish sneaker made using recycled coffee grounds.

The limited-edition capsule collection was inspired by the principles of zero-waste, eco-design, and French style, with RE:GROUND set to become an instant icon of sustainable fashion. Each pair of RE:GROUND sneakers contains 12 cups’ worth of coffee grounds¹ from Nespresso’s capsule recycling scheme, which have been integrated into the vegan leather uppers as well as the soles of the shoes. The rest of RE:GROUND is made using 80% recycled and sustainable materials.

Internet searches for sustainable brands have grown by more than 45% during the past five years² as consumers become increasingly aware of their wardrobe’s environmental footprint. Laure Babin, the 25-year-old CEO of Zèta, recognised a growing gap in the market for eco-conscious footwear. She founded the brand two years ago with a goal of creating the world’s first zero-waste sustainable sneaker.

Guillaume Le Cunff, Nespresso CEO, said: “Zèta is an incredible start-up that brings together style and sustainability. The brand’s commitment to circularity means they are pushing the envelope in terms of creating new value from waste, and their spirit of innovation has led them to design a whole new use for our recycled coffee grounds. Zèta’s RE:GROUND capsule collection is sure to delight coffee and fashion fans alike.”
Zèta worked with Tintex, its fabric manufacturer, to create the innovative coffee faux-leather made using grounds recycled through the Nespresso capsule recycling scheme.

Zèta shoes are made in Portugal and the brand only ships to customers in Europe in order to maintain a short product circuit. The limited edition RE:GROUND capsule collection is exclusively available on www.zeta-shoes.com, while stocks last.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY?

"The concept of the circular economy stands in opposition to that of the production chain. With a production chain, you have raw material,a production line, waste, and at the end of that chain: a product. The circular economy is a greener version of that, where all resources, including waste, are used up before releasing the product."

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS TODAY?
